CALE RESIDENCE

BRENTWOOD, CA

Situated in the well-known postwar architectural community of Crestwood Hills, formerly the Mutual Housing Association (MHA), the Friedman House was in original condition at the death of Marianne Friedman. The MHA community, originally designed by architects A. Quincy Jones, Whitney R. Smith, and structural engineer Edgardo Contini, is in the hills of Brentwood, Los Angeles. Only 30 of the original 85 houses remain, the Friedman House being the only model of its kind featuring a U-shaped plan. The one-story house, virtually untouched since the late 50s was sold to an owner who altered the house very little. Walter Cale purchased the property a few years later in 2014, as a single man.

Buckner was hired to expand the dining room area and add a master bedroom suite at the rear. The post and beam structure of the house dictated the structure of both additions, resulting in space with exposed beams and plentiful glass opening onto a new pool and patio area.
